The RIESEN is the oldest “Princes tavern” in Germany. It is said to have been already known, and recognised officially, by the court as early as the mid 12th. Century.  In 1314, Ludwig from Bavaria stayed at the “RIESEN zu Miltenberg” shortly after his coronation, and in 1368 Karl IV also made a visit here.

The first official historic document mentioning the RIESEN exists in a book of court records dating from 1411. From these records we learn that, the landlord’s name was Conrad Trestram, and it is believed that he was responsible for erecting the Gothic building, parts of which still exist to this day. Later Jost Virnhaber built the impressive Renaissance building in 1590.

During the Middle Ages many “witch trials”   took place here on the square, in front of the RIESEN. One of the ways to be rid of folk was to accuse them of witchcraft, and jealousy of good fortune was often among the merchants! This is the most likely reason that, many a RIESEN Landlord’s days, ended rather abruptly at the stake. The RIESEN`s ownership, changed hands regularly until the end of the 20th. century. In 1970 it was eventually bought by Werner Jöst, an architect from Weinheim. He was responsible for saving the building from falling to ruins. In April 2001 the brewery “ Brauhaus Faust “ thoroughly renovated  the interior, and  re-opened the Inn, known as  “Gasthaus zum RIESEN “ The planning and decoration has been carefully chosen to combine the historic importance of this special building,  by remaining loyal to tradition, and also gaining an atmosphere of  modern flair .

Today the RIESEN proudly presents itself again as a unique place to come in and meet,  have a chat, or simply enjoy time here; it caters for locals and visitors, of all ages.
